Join us for an evening of art, food and drink with Martine Gosselink, Director of the Mauritshuis.

This fall, The Mauritshuis will present the exhibit: LOOT – 10 stories. A very topical subject, many museums in the Netherlands and abroad have been conducting research into the provenance of their collections in recent years. This concerns both art with a war past, stolen from Jewish owners, colonial looted art and art looted by French revolutionary troops. By properly mapping out the history of the objects, the future of these artworks can be considered.

The subject has direct links with the Mauritshuis. In 1795, French troops took the paintings from Prince William V’s collection to Paris, where they would remain until 1815. Between 1822 and 1875, the ground floor of the Mauritshuis was reserved for the Royal Cabinet of Curiosities, which housed various objects with a colonial provenance. There are also paintings from the so-called ‘NK collection’ in the Mauritshuis. This collection consists of cultural objects that were stolen from Jewish owners during the Second World War and then transferred to Germany. Some of these objects returned to the Netherlands after the war and have been part of the national collection ever since.

A reception with drinks and substantial hors d’oeuvres will follow the talks. The event is ticketed at $ 75, and proceeds will benefit the American Friends of the Mauritshuis and the Fulbright-AFMh Grant, awarded to an American graduate student in paintings conservation.
